By Isah Babayo

The North East Development Commission (NEDC), a government agency aimed at the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the North East region, played a pivotal role in addressing the bewildered issue of terrorism in the area.

The acting coordinator of the commission in Gombe, Alh Rufai Lawan Babamanu, attended a two-day sensitization workshop organized by the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Center (CISLAC) in Gombe.

He highlighted the importance of community-led efforts by leaders in mitigating the menace of terrorism.

The workshop, held at the Custodian Hotels in Gombe, brought together a diverse array of stakeholders, including civil society organizations, community leaders, faith-based groups, and representatives from various security agencies.

The event was to foster a collaborative approach to countering the threat of terrorism that has become a major issue of concern in the North East region for years.

Babamanu, in his address during the event, highlighted the important role that community leaders can play in addressing the root causes of terrorism and engaging with the local population to build resilience.

He urged the government, community leaders, and other stakeholders to take the necessary steps to address the bewildered issues that have fueled the rise of extremism.

The workshop provided a platform for open dialogue and the exchange of ideas among the participants.

Representatives from various security agencies, including the military and the police, shared their perspectives on the current security landscape and the challenges they face in combating terrorism.

Community leaders, on the other hand, shared their experiences and insights on how they have been able to work with local residents to mitigate the impact of terrorist activities within their respective areas.

The event also saw the participation of youth organizations, which played a crucial role in advocating for the inclusion of young people in the decision-making process and the implementation of counter-terrorism strategies.

The workshop underscored the importance of a multi-stakeholder approach where government agencies, civil society, and local communities work together to address the complex issue of terrorism in the North East region.

However, through this diverse group of stakeholders, the sensitization workshop aimed to foster a sense of collective responsibility and empower local communities to take an active role in the fight against terrorism.

The insights and recommendations generated during the event are expected to inform the NEDC's future interventions and contribute to the efforts to restore peace and stability in the North East region.
